Writer’s Guidelines

To be considered for student publication, the rules are simple. Homeschooled students of any age under 18 may submit one or more articles or stories under any category. Selections will be made by the editor based on interest level, quality of language, organization, originality, and demonstration of structure and style methodology. Due to the large amount of submissions, any submission that fails to adhere to the writer’s guidelines will not be considered.

Accepted Work Following IEW Units
Units 1 & 2. Summarizing from Notes
Unit 3. Summarizing Narrative Stories
Unit 4. Summarizing a Reference
Unit 5. Writing from Pictures
Unit 6. Research Reports
Unit 7. Creative Writing with Structure
Unit 8. Formal or Persuasive Essay
Unit 9. Formal Literary Critique

Accepted Specialized Categories
1. Journalism (News Stories, Feature Stories, Profiles, and Opinion Pieces)
2. Original Fiction
3. Original Poetry
4. Original artwork

Submission Guidelines
At the top of each submission, students should include the following:
1. Name
2. Current age
3. Which category they are submitting to
4. Title of submission

-Please send all submissions in Microsoft Word.
-Submissions should be single-spaced in Times New Roman, using font size 12.
-Please do not include stylistic indicators.
-All submissions should be spell-checked and edited.
-Use only ONE space after each sentence.
-All submissions MUST be original work. Plagiarism is NOT acceptable.
-All submissions must be “family friendly” to be considered for publication.
-All submissions must be submitted along with a Publication Consent Form

IEW unit 1-9 submissions
-Units 1, 2, 4 should be between 80 and 250 words.
-Units 5-9 should be between 350 and 1500 words.
-Students are required to use proper dress-ups and sentence openers for their level.
-Please do not include stylistic indicators.
-Students are encouraged to use decorations/triples.

Poetry submissions
-Submissions should be between 80 and 250 words.

Fiction submissions
-Submissions should be between 350 and 1500 words.

Journalism submissions
-Submissions should be between 350 and 1500 words.
-Stories should follow the Associated Press Style.
-Journalism categories include, news stories, feature stories, opinion pieces, and how-to stories.
-If you have interviewed people for your story, please make sure they are aware that you are submitting your piece for possible publication.

Due to the large amount of submissions, any submission that fails to adhere to this format will not be considered.

Upcoming Submission Deadlines
Although we are always accepting submissions, by emailing your work by the deadline will guarantee that it will be considered for the specific unit e-newsletter. For example, if you submit a unit 4 piece by the deadline below, it will be considered for both the unit 4 e-newsletter and the print magazine. 

Units 1 & 2 – September 22

Unit 3 – October 20

Yearly Print Magazine – October 27

Unit 4 – November 17

Unit 5 – December 15
